National Aviation Day
Established in 1939 to celebrate the history and development of aviation, this holiday is set on the birthday of Orville Wright (b.1871), who together with his brother Wilbur invented and built the first successful airplane. Orville made the first flight at Kittyhawk, in North Carolina, on December 17, 1903.
On this day, some teachers arrange for students to participate in classroom discussions and activities on the topic of aviation, sometimes engaging in interactive tasks related to heavier-than-air human flight. There are often also visits to museums with displays for aviation history and technology, and discussions of careers associated with the aviation industry.
