In late March, 1821, Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag over the monastery of Agia Lavra, inviting the people to rise up against the almost 400-year occupation by the Ottoman Empire, initiating the War for Independence. The exact date is not known, so the national holiday commemorating the event, known as “Greek Independence Day,” came to be associated with the Religious Feast of the Annunciation. On this day, members of the Noodynamics Institute around the world celebrate Greece as a part of Western Civilization.
