Battle of the Bridge
Called Gioco dd Ponte in Italy, this is a grand historical reenactment event, dating back centuries, which is held every year in Pisa on the last Saturday in June.
Centered on the beautiful bridge over the Arno, the Ponte de Mezzo, the Battle of the Bridge features two teams dressed in elaborate 16th century costumes, representing the districts north (Tramontana) and south (Pisa) of the river. The two forces march along the river banks, engage in diverse martial preliminaries, and finally converge in a battle on the bridge. In the contemporary version (since 1935) the ‘battle’ consists in a contest over an iron cart.
